In short: It depends on the month. In early April and from about September, the Buža bars under the south walls see the sun set over open sea. From late April to late August the Lapad hills hide it from the Old Town, so go up Srđ by cable car, west to Lapad and Petka hill, or out by boat.
Prices for other operators in this guide were checked on 2 October 2026. They change through the season, so check the operator’s own page before you book. Our own prices come from our live price list.
The best place to watch the sunset in Dubrovnik depends on the month. From the Old Town shore, the Lapad peninsula hides the sun from about 21 April to 22 August, so in summer you need height (Mount Srđ), a view to the west (Lapad Bay and Petka hill) or a boat. In early April and from about September, the Buža bars under the south walls see it set over open sea.
Why the month matters more than the spot
The sun sets in a different place through the season. On 1 April it goes down at a compass bearing of about 277°, just north of west. By late June it has swung round to about 303°, well north of west, and by 31 October it is back at 251°, south of west. Sunset moves from about 19:15 in early April to about 20:30 at the start of July, then to 16:42 on 31 October, after the clocks go back. Our sunset and departure timetable lists both for every fortnight.
That swing decides what is in the way. From right under the city walls, the hills of the Lapad peninsula block the view from about 21 April to 22 August and cut the sunset about 20 minutes early. In early April and from late August to October, the sun sets over open sea or the far tip of Mljet, and you can watch it from the Old Town shore. Spots further west or higher up see more of the summer sunsets. Where does the sun set in Dubrovnik? explains the geometry, and the sunset section of our home page has tonight’s details.
Where to watch the sunset in Dubrovnik Old Town
The Buža bars, outside the south walls
Two bars sit on the rocks outside the south walls. Buža is reached through an opening in the wall at Crijevićeva 9: climb the Jesuit Steps from Gundulić Square towards St Ignatius Church and follow the “Cold Drinks” signs. Bard, also called Mala Buža, is a little further along at Ispod Mira 14. Both face the open sea, with Lokrum to your left, and you can swim from the rocks. You pay only for what you drink.
In early April and from about September, the sun drops into open sea off to your right. From late April to late August it goes behind the Lapad hills about 20 minutes before the official time, and from some seats the walls and rocks just west of the bars hide it sooner still. In summer you get the colour in the sky without the sun on the water. Buža gets very busy in summer, so arrive an hour before sunset for a seat at the edge, and carry some cash as a backup.
The city walls
Plan the walls as a golden-hour walk. The official rule is that the published closing time is also the last entry. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the full circuit. With the 2026 hours, the last entry came before sunset every evening from 1 April to 24 October:
| 2026 dates | Last entry | Sunset | Last entry is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–30 April | 18:30 | 19:14–19:47 | 44–77 min earlier |
| 1–31 May | 19:00 | 19:48–20:18 | 48–78 min earlier |
| 1 June–5 August | 19:30 | 20:03–20:30 | 33–60 min earlier |
| 6–31 August | 19:00 | 19:24–20:02 | 24–62 min earlier |
| 1–14 September | 18:30 | 19:00–19:22 | 30–52 min earlier |
| 15–30 September | 18:00 | 18:31–18:58 | 31–58 min earlier |
| 1–14 October | 17:30 | 18:07–18:29 | 37–59 min earlier |
| 15–24 October | 17:00 | 17:52–18:06 | 52–66 min earlier |
| 25–31 October | 17:00 | 16:42–16:50 | 10–18 min later |
After the clocks go back on 25 October, sunset comes before the 17:00 last entry, so the final week of the season is the one time you can plan to be up there as the sun goes down. In 2026 tickets cost €40 for adults and €15 for ages 7 to 18, under-7s go free, and the ticket also covers Fort Lovrijenac. The circuit is one-way, so start early enough to reach the western walls while the light is low. The Pile entrance is often the busiest; there are others at Ploče and at St John’s Fortress by the Old Port. Hours are set each year by the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities; check the 2027 times before you go.
Fort Lovrijenac
Lovrijenac stands on a 37-metre rock at Pile, just outside the walls. During the Summer Festival it is used as a stage, most famously for Hamlet. Entry is included in the walls ticket. The fort keeps daytime hours, and some days it shuts early: the tourist board listed nine dates in late August and September 2026 when it closed between 13:00 and 17:00. Treat it as a late-afternoon stop. From the top you look across Pile bay to the western walls in low light, and south-west over open sea. Because it sits beside the walls, the same rule applies: the Lapad hills hide the sun from late April to late August.
Mount Srđ by cable car
For height, take the cable car up Srđ. The upper station sits at 405 metres, the ride takes under four minutes, and the Panorama Restaurant & Bar in the station building takes reservations. From the terraces you look down on the Old Town and Lokrum and out to the islands. An adult return costs €30 (€17 one way), children aged 4 to 12 pay €8 return, and under-4s ride free.
The cable car timetable works for sunset in every month of the season. It runs until 21:00 in April, until midnight from June to mid-September and until 20:00 in late October, and the last car up leaves 30 minutes before closing. It stops when the wind is too strong, so check on a windy evening.
Where you stand matters in midsummer. The quieter spots a few minutes’ walk south of the station frame the Old Town and the sunset together, but in June and July the sun can set out of sight from there. Stay on the main terraces by the station for a clear line. As the sunset moves south in autumn, more of the hillside works. The main terraces are the busiest place on the hill at sunset.
Lapad: Sunset Beach, the promenade and Petka hill
Uvala Lapad and Sunset Beach
Lapad Bay (Uvala Lapad) opens to the west between Babin Kuk and the Petka headland, with the Elaphiti islands on the horizon. The pedestrian Lapad promenade, Šetalište kralja Zvonimira, runs for about a kilometre to the beach at the head of the bay, known as Sunset Beach. Bus 4 runs between Pile and Lapad, and a ticket from the driver costs €2.50.
On the map, the bay gives a clear view of the sunset from its head in April and from about mid-August to mid-October. Between late April and mid-August the sun drops behind the Babin Kuk shore on your right, so walk out along the south side of the bay, towards Petka, for an open line to the north-west. The beach is free, and the promenade fills with families on summer evenings.
Petka hill
Velika Petka, the 192-metre hill above the south side of the bay, sits in a protected, open-access forest park with no entrance fee. The summit has a 360° view, with the Elaphiti islands on the horizon on a clear day, and at that height nothing nearby blocks the sun in any month. You will mostly meet Lapad locals out running or walking their dogs. The first trails are about 20 minutes’ walk from Lapad beach. The ground is uneven and there is no water or café, so wear proper shoes, bring a drink, and carry a torch for the walk down at dusk.
Gradac Park and Danče
Gradac Park, a few minutes’ walk west of Pile Gate, reopened on 16 September 2026 after its first full renovation in more than 120 years, with new paths and lighting. Below it, Danče is the city’s oldest public swimming spot, with a small café-bar, and it is popular with locals. Both are free and look out over open sea. In summer the Lapad shore to the west hides the sun. From about the third week of September it sets clear of the headland, so this is an autumn spot. Watch from the rocks at the point, as the cove itself is enclosed.
At sea: following the sun by boat
A boat solves the direction problem because it can wait where the view is open. Shared cruises leave from the Old Town port, sunset kayak tours paddle from Pile along the walls towards Lokrum, and several private operators work from Gruž. Our own three routes leave Marina Frapa in Gruž at a time set by that evening’s sunset:
- Route A, Golden Hour Express (shared or private, about 1 h 10 min): out past Daksa to the Grebeni lighthouse rocks, an optional swim of about 10 minutes when the sea is calm, then prosecco facing the Elaphiti islands. The sun sets behind Koločep from late April to late August and over open sea in spring and autumn.
- Route B, Sunset & City Walls (shared or private, about 1 h 50 min): along the Lapad cliffs and Danče to Fort Lovrijenac and the walls as golden hour starts, past Lokrum, then a wait about 1.5 km south-west of Lovrijenac. The walls and Lokrum sit behind the boat and catch the last light. There is no swim stop. See Route B.
- Route C, Koločep Swim & Sunset (private, about 2 h 20 min): a swim of about 40 minutes in a sheltered cove on Koločep’s east side, a slow golden-hour cruise, then the sunset off Grebeni.
From late April to late August the sun sinks behind Koločep and the Elaphiti islands a few minutes before the official time. Shared seats start at €25 and private boats at €180 per boat. The posts on kayak or boat and Karaka, catamaran or speedboat compare the other ways onto the water.

Plan your evening
Check tonight’s sunset and boarding time, then pick the spot that suits the month: the Old Town shore in early April and autumn, Srđ, Lapad or Petka in high summer. Find your seat before golden hour starts, and stay for the blue hour, when the city lights come on. If you want the walls in golden light and the sunset in one evening, Route B does both.
The shared boat takes 12 guests at most, so one large group can fill an evening.
