Who we are

The crew. The sunset you came for.

Sunset boat tours from a crew that has worked out of Marina Frapa since 2008.

Our boats have run every kind of trip out of Marina Frapa: island days, Blue Cave mornings, private charters. Sunset Dubrovnik gives the evening trips their own name and their own rules.

The rules are simple. Every departure is calculated from that night’s sunset. The boats are small, so everyone gets a seat by the rail. The skipper picks the waiting spot for the evening’s sun and wind, and the price you see is the price you pay.

The boats are led by Captain Marin, our lead skipper, who has run boats out of Marina Frapa since 2010.

The sunset

When the sun sets in Dubrovnik, where, and why the sea is the best seat

Across the season the time moves by almost four hours and the sun’s setting point swings by more than 50 degrees. Knowing both decides where you should be standing, or floating.

In short: Dubrovnik’s sunset comes at 19:13 on 1 April, peaks at 20:30 from 24 June to 30 June and falls to 16:42 by 31 October, after the clocks go back. The sun sets over the sea to the west, behind the Elaphiti islands in midsummer. A boat off Grebeni or south-west of the Old Town sees the whole sunset and the lit-up walls.

The sun setting behind a line of islands, seen from a moving boat off Dubrovnik

Sunset, golden hour and blue hour, defined

Sunset is the moment the top edge of the sun drops below the horizon. Golden hour is the stretch before it, once the sun is lower than 6 degrees: in Dubrovnik that lasts about 37 to 43 minutes, and it is when the limestone of the walls turns amber. Blue hour, strictly civil twilight, is the half hour after sunset (29 to 35 minutes here), while the sky keeps its colour and the city lights come on.

On 15 June golden hour starts at 19:44, the sun sets at 20:27 and civil twilight ends at 21:02. On 15 October the same three moments fall at 17:28, 18:06 and 18:34.

Where the sun sets, month by month

On 1 April the sun goes down at a bearing of 277°, just north of due west. It swings north through May and June to about 303° at midsummer, then back south: 275° in mid-September and 251° by 31 October.

That swing matters because of the coast. In summer the sun sets behind the line of the Elaphiti islands: Koločep, Lopud and Šipan. In April and from late August it sets over open sea, with nothing but the far tip of Mljet on the horizon.

Why the Old Town loses the summer sunset

From right under the city walls, the hills of the Lapad peninsula sit exactly where the summer sun goes down. Roughly from 21 April to 22 August they cut the sunset short by about 20 minutes, so the walls fall into shadow while the sky is still bright.

Move 1.5 km out to sea, south-west of Fort Lovrijenac, and the angle opens up. From there, or from off the Grebeni lighthouse, the sun sinks behind Koločep only a few minutes before the official time. That is where our boats wait.

Map of Dubrovnik from Daksa to Lokrum with three sunset lines: in June from under the city walls the line runs into Lapad; in June from 1.5 km south-west of Fort Lovrijenac it passes Grebeni and ends on Koločep; in October from under the walls it runs to open sea

When the walls glow

The walls and Fort Lovrijenac face the sea to the south and west. In golden hour the low sun lights those faces directly, and the stone warms from grey to honey and then pink.

You only see this from the water. From the walls themselves you are standing on the stone; from Srđ you look down on the roofs. Route B passes under the walls just as golden hour begins, then waits offshore so the lit-up city is behind you while the sun sets ahead.

On land or at sea: an honest comparison

Mount Srđ (412 m), by cable car or on foot, gives the widest view over the Old Town and the islands, with the biggest crowd. Fort Lovrijenac and the city walls have their own tickets and opening hours, so check them on the day. Buža, the cliff bars below the southern walls, is about the drinks and the sea view. Sunset Beach is a public beach in Lapad bay, facing west.

All of these are good evenings out. What land can’t give you is an open horizon in midsummer and the walls lit up in the same view. Our guide to the best places to watch the sunset covers each one in detail.

The short version

June to early September for the warmest evenings and the latest sunsets, around 20:30 in late June. May and late September for calmer harbours and the sun setting over open sea. October for early, golden evenings: the sun goes down before 18:30, and at 16:42 on the last night.

Month by month

April: sunsets just after 19:00, cool evenings, so bring a warm layer for the ride back. The sun sets over open sea until about 20 April.

May and June: evenings lengthen fast. From late April to late August the sun drops behind the Elaphiti islands seen from the sea, and behind Lapad from under the walls.

July and August: the longest, warmest evenings and the busiest harbour. Book a few days ahead.

September and October: the sun sets over open sea again and earlier each night. The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, so the final week of the season has sunsets around 16:45.

Wind: bura, jugo and maestral

Maestral is the north-westerly sea breeze of summer afternoons. It usually eases towards evening, which is part of why sunset is a good time to be on the water.

Bura blows cold and gusty from the north-east. It brings very clear air and sharp colours, but it can make the sea rough enough to cancel.

Jugo comes from the south-east: warm, humid, with haze, cloud and a long swell. If wind or sea make a trip unsafe, the skipper cancels and you choose a full refund or another evening.

For the forecast, use the Croatian meteorological service, DHMZ (meteo.hr).

Clouds and the overcast promise

A few clouds usually make a better sunset: they catch the colour after the sun has gone. A full overcast is different.

If a full overcast hides the sunset, you can move to another evening free of charge instead of sailing, subject to availability. Message us on the day if the sky looks grey and we’ll sort it out with you.

Landmarks

The landmarks, at the light that suits them

An evening on the water from Gruž passes some of the best-known views on the Croatian coast. Here is what you’ll see, on which route, and when it looks its best.

The Old Town walls

Almost two kilometres of medieval walls wrap the Old Town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. From the land they are a walk; from the sea they are the whole picture: the walls, the bell tower and the harbour in one frame.

Best light: the start of golden hour, when the low sun from the west lights the stone. Route: B, which passes under the walls and then waits offshore with them behind the boat.

Fort Lovrijenac

St Lawrence’s fortress stands on a 37-metre rock just west of the Old Town, guarding the approach from the sea. Its gate carries the city’s motto, Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro: freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world. In summer it is a stage for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Best light: golden hour from the south-west, when the fort and the walls light up together. Route: B.

Lokrum

The wooded island facing the Old Town is a nature reserve, with a ruined Benedictine monastery, a botanical garden, peacocks and a small salt lake, Mrtvo more. Nobody may stay on the island overnight.

Best light: the last minutes before sunset, when its western shore turns gold. Route: B passes its west side.

Koločep and the Elaphiti islands

Koločep is the closest of the inhabited Elaphiti islands, car-free, with two small villages, Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo. Behind it lie Lopud and Šipan. The name Elaphiti is usually traced to the Greek word for deer.

Best light: sunset itself. From late April to late August the sun goes down behind this line of islands, seen from the waiting spot. Routes: all three; C swims in a cove on Koločep’s east side.

Daksa and the Grebeni lighthouse

Daksa is the small wooded island at the mouth of Gruž harbour, with a lighthouse and the ruins of a medieval Franciscan monastery. Further out, off the tip of Babin Kuk, Grebeni (“the reefs”) is a cluster of bare rocks with its own lighthouse, and the open channel beyond it is our favourite waiting spot.

Best light: sunset, with nothing between you and the horizon. Routes: A and C wait here; B passes on the way out.

Gruž, Lapad and the Franjo Tuđman Bridge

You leave from the Lapad side of Gruž, the city’s working port, where ferries to the islands and the cruise ships tie up. Look back as you leave: the white cable-stayed Franjo Tuđman Bridge spans the Rijeka Dubrovačka inlet behind the harbour. On the way back after dark, the harbour lights mark the way in.

Best light: blue hour on the return, when the bridge and the harbour lights come on. Routes: all three.

Small boats

Small boats, quiet water

Why we keep the groups small.

Many sunset cruises leave from the Old Town harbour on larger boats. Ours leave from Gruž with at most 12 guests. That means a seat by the rail for everyone, a skipper who can talk to the whole boat, and a small hull that can wait exactly where the sun is setting that evening.

If you want even more space, a private boat for six costs €180 on the Golden Hour Express.

Reviews

Reviews, honestly

Sunset Dubrovnik is a new name, so it has no reviews of its own yet, and we won’t borrow stars to fill the space. Here is what you can check for yourself before you book.

  • The company Technic one d.o.o., OIB 63056167991: look it up in the official Croatian court register.
  • The price What you see on the booking page is what Stripe charges, fuel included, no booking fee.
  • The times Every departure is worked out from that evening’s sunset: see the season timetable.
  • The policy The same cancellation terms for every booking, with a free move if a full overcast hides the sunset.

After your sunset, we’d love an honest review, good or bad. It is how a new name earns trust.

Local knowledge

Beyond the guidebook

A few Croatian words you’ll hear on board, what the summer calendar does to the city in the evening, and how to get a sunset photo from a moving boat.

Words you’ll hear on the boat

Your skipper will switch to English for you, but these come up every evening.

The summer calendar

The Dubrovnik Summer Festival fills the Old Town’s squares and forts with theatre and music every year from 10 July to 25 August. Evening performances mean busier streets around Pile and the walls, and the Old Town at sunset is at its most crowded.

That is one more reason the sea works in midsummer: the boats leave from Gruž, away from the Old Town crowds, and the city comes to you as a view.

Sunset photos from a moving boat

  • Expose for the sky. On a phone, tap the brightest part of the sky and slide the exposure down until the sun’s edge is sharp.
  • Turn the flash off for the sunset; turn it on for faces after it, so they aren’t silhouettes.
  • Use a fast shutter. The boat moves even at rest. Burst mode and a steady elbow on the rail help.
  • Shoot the other way too. On Route B the walls glow behind you while the sun sets ahead.
  • Keep shooting after sunset. The strongest colour often comes 10 to 20 minutes later.

Planning your evening

Sunset times, where to watch, what it costs and what to wear, from the crew.

Best places to watch the sunset

It depends on the month. In early April and from about September, the Buža bars under the south walls see the sun set over open sea. From late April to late August the Lapad hills hide it from the Old Town, so go up Srđ by cable car, west to Lapad and Petka hill, or out by boat. (Other operators’ prices checked 2026-10-02.)

Dubrovnik sunset times by month

Sunset in Dubrovnik ranges from about 16:14 in early December to 20:30 in the last week of June. In the boating season it is 19:13 on 1 April, peaks at 20:30 in late June, and falls to 18:06 by mid-October and 16:42 on 31 October, after the clocks go back.

Karaka, catamaran or speedboat?

For a big, steady ship with a bar and toilets, choose the Karaka (€45, 90 minutes, ages 16 and over) or Galleon Tirena, which takes children. For a shorter hour close to the water in a small group, choose a catamaran or a small speedboat. Once four or more of you are going, price a private boat too. (Other operators’ prices checked 2026-10-02.)

Questions

Everything else guests ask

If your question isn’t here, message us on WhatsApp. We reply within the hour between 08:00 and 20:00 Dubrovnik time.

What time is sunset in Dubrovnik?

It moves through the year. In the boating season it is 19:13 on 1 April, peaks at 20:30 in the last week of June, and falls to 16:42 on 31 October after the clocks go back. Today’s time is at the top of this page, and the season timetable lists every fortnight.

What time do the sunset boats leave?

Each route leaves a fixed number of minutes before that evening’s sunset, rounded down to the quarter hour: Golden Hour Express 50 minutes before, Sunset & City Walls 75 minutes, Koločep Swim & Sunset 105 minutes. Pick a date on the booking page and it shows the exact departure, sunset and return times.

How much is a sunset cruise in Dubrovnik?

Shared: €25 per adult on the Golden Hour Express, and €35 (June to September) or €30 (April, May, October) on Sunset & City Walls. Children 4–11 pay €15 or €20, and under-4s are free. Private boats cost €180 to €550 for the whole boat, fuel included. Full price list.

What is the difference between the three routes?

Golden Hour Express (about 1 h 10 min) is the short one: out past Daksa to the Grebeni lighthouse and the sunset from the open channel. Sunset & City Walls (about 1 h 50 min) adds the Old Town walls, Fort Lovrijenac and Lokrum in golden light, then waits offshore for the sunset. Koločep Swim & Sunset (about 2 h 20 min, private only) starts earlier with a proper swim on Koločep, then the sunset off Grebeni.

Do any of the sunset tours go to the Blue Cave?

No. The Blue Cave is a daytime trip: its blue light needs a high sun. None of our sunset routes stops there.

Where do the boats leave from?

From Marina Frapa in Gruž, at Lapadska obala 21a. Check in at our office with the yellow flag at the marina entrance 15 minutes before departure. It is about 10 minutes by taxi from the Old Town, and there is no free parking. Directions.

Can we swim on a sunset tour?

On Koločep Swim & Sunset, yes: about 40 minutes in a sheltered cove on Koločep. On Golden Hour Express there is an optional 10-minute swim when the sea is calm. Sunset & City Walls has no swim stop. Towels are not provided.

What is included?

Licensed skipper, Fuel, Prosecco toast (adults), Life jackets on board. Private boats also get the whole boat for your group. Not included: towels (bring your own if you plan to swim); hotel pickup (available on request); extras such as flowers or a photographer (on request).

How many people are on a shared boat?

At most 12, counting children and babies, on the Ayros 22. Private boats take up to 6 (Fisher 20) or up to 12 (Ayros 22).

Can children come?

Yes, children are welcome. On shared tours children 4–11 pay the child price, and children under 4 ride free but count toward the boat’s limit. Every booking needs at least one adult.

Is a private sunset tour worth it?

For six or more people it often costs little more per person than shared seats, and you get the boat to yourselves, your own pace and the choice of route. See the per-person comparison.

What happens if it is cloudy or windy?

If a full overcast hides the sunset, you can move to another evening free of charge instead of sailing, subject to availability. If we cancel for any reason, including unsafe sea or wind, you choose a full refund or a free move to another evening.

What is the cancellation policy?

100% refund 24 hours or more before departure; 50% refund 12 to 24 hours before departure; 0% refund less than 12 hours before departure, or no-show. Times count from your scheduled departure, in local Dubrovnik time. Full policy.

Can I book a sunset tour for tonight?

Online booking opens from tomorrow. For tonight, message us on WhatsApp at +385 91 600 1201 and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

How far ahead should I book?

A shared boat takes at most 12 guests, so book July and August evenings as early as you can. Online booking runs from tomorrow up to 18 months ahead.

When does the season run?

From 1 April to 31 October. Outside the season, ask us about a private trip.

What should I wear?

Summer clothes and flat shoes with grip, plus a light layer: the ride back after sunset is cooler than you expect, especially in April, May and October. Bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim. See our what to wear guide.

Can you set up a proposal or a special occasion?

Yes, on a private boat. Extras are arranged by message, never sold blind online: champagne or a Croatian sparkling wine instead of prosecco, flowers on board, a proposal set-up, a professional photographer, extra time on the water, hotel pickup. Tell us what you have in mind.

Do you pick up from hotels?

Hotel pickup is available on request and is not included in the price. Ask when you book and we’ll confirm what’s possible for your hotel.

Is the boat ride rough?

Usually not in the evening: the summer breeze tends to drop around sunset, and the routes stay close to the coast. If the sea is unsafe, the skipper cancels and you choose a refund or another evening.

Is the boat accessible for wheelchair users?

The boats are small and boarded from the marina pontoon, so it depends on the person and the day. Message us before booking and we’ll tell you honestly what will work.

Who runs Sunset Dubrovnik?

Technic one d.o.o., a Croatian company registered in Dubrovnik, OIB 63056167991. Our crew has run boats from Marina Frapa since 2008, and every skipper holds a Croatian licence. About us.

How do I pay?

By card on Stripe’s secure checkout: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Prices are in euros and include VAT. There is no booking fee.

Is Sunset Dubrovnik the same as Sunset Beach Dubrovnik?

No. Sunset Beach Dubrovnik is a beach in Lapad bay. We are a sunset boat tour company leaving from Marina Frapa in Gruž.
