A sunset proposal in Dubrovnik: private boat ideas, timing and the details that matter

In short: Book a private boat for an evening early in your stay, so a spare evening is left if the weather turns. Route B passes the Old Town walls in golden light, then waits on open water for the sunset, from €250 for up to six. Route C adds a swim of about 40 minutes first, from €320.

For a sunset proposal, book a private boat for an evening early in your stay, so a spare evening is left if the weather turns. Route B is the classic choice: the Old Town walls in golden light, then the sunset from open water with the boat waiting. Route C suits couples who would like a swim first.

Choosing the evening

Every departure is timed from that evening’s sunset, which moves from 20:29 at the start of July to 16:42 on the last day of October. Golden hour, when the light turns low and warm, starts about 40 minutes before sunset. These are our times for the 2027 season, in local time:

From late April to late August the sun sinks behind Koločep and the other Elaphiti islands a few minutes before the official time, so plan the moment for about 10 minutes before the sunset in the table. In April and from late August to October it sets over open sea, or the far tip of Mljet, and you see it reach the horizon. Today’s times are under tonight’s sunset, the full season is in the sunset and departure timetable, and the reasons behind the islands-or-open-sea pattern are in where the sun sets in Dubrovnik.

Choose an evening in the first half of your stay. If a full overcast hides the sunset, you can move to another evening free of charge, subject to availability, and that only helps if you still have evenings left.

Which private sunset cruise suits a proposal

Route B: the walls in golden light, then open water

Route B, Sunset & City Walls, takes about 1 h 50 min. It leaves Marina Frapa 75 minutes before sunset, rounded down to the quarter hour, and heads out past Daksa to the Grebeni lighthouse and the Petka cliffs of Lapad. It then follows Lapad and Danče to Fort Lovrijenac and is under the Old Town walls as golden hour starts, about 40 minutes before sunset, with a Prosecco toast. After passing the west side of Lokrum, the boat waits about 1.5 km south-west of Lovrijenac for the last 10 minutes, with the walls behind it.

That wait is the natural moment. The boat is stopped, the light is at its warmest, and Lokrum and the walls behind you catch the last light. Ten minutes after sunset, blue hour starts and the city lights come on as the boat heads back past Grebeni, which makes a quiet run home. Route B has no swim stop.

On Route B the Prosecco normally comes out under the walls, about 40 minutes before sunset. If you would rather keep the toast for after the question, say so when you write to us.

Route C: a swim first

Route C, Koločep Swim & Sunset, is private only and takes about 2 h 20 min. It leaves 105 minutes before sunset and crosses to Koločep for a swim of about 40 minutes in a sheltered cove on the island’s east side. The skipper picks the cove for the day’s wind. Then come a Prosecco toast, a slow golden-hour cruise along the Koločep channel, and a wait off Grebeni facing the Elaphiti islands for the sunset.

It suits couples who love the water, and the slow cruise gives you a calm run-up. Towels are not provided, so bring your own, plus a dry layer for the evening (see what to wear on a sunset boat trip).

Route A: short and simple

Route A, Golden Hour Express, takes about 1 h 10 min: out past Daksa to the Grebeni lighthouse rocks, an optional swim of about 10 minutes when the sea is calm, then a Prosecco toast facing the Elaphiti islands and the sunset from the open channel. It is the shortest and least expensive private option.

You can also propose on a shared tour, but the shared boat takes up to 12 guests, so you would have an audience.

Prices are per boat, as of 2 October 2026, with fuel included, no surcharge at the dock and no booking fees. Every private boat comes with a licensed skipper, a Prosecco toast for adults and life jackets. For two people the Fisher 20 is the more intimate choice. The Ayros 22 makes sense if family or friends are coming to celebrate. The per-person comparison with shared tours is under prices.

What to ask for when you inquire

These private extras are arranged by inquiry only. They have no online price and are quoted on request:

  • Champagne or a Croatian sparkling wine instead of Prosecco
  • Flowers on board
  • A proposal set-up
  • A professional photographer
  • Extra time on the water
  • Hotel pickup

Send the date, the route, the number of guests and what you have in mind. Write to us on WhatsApp at +385 91 600 1201, by email at info@sunsetdubrovnik.com or through the contact page. We reply within the hour between 08:00 and 20:00 local time. Extra time is worth asking about if you would like longer on the water after the sun goes down. If a photographer is coming, ask how that fits with your group size and the boat you have chosen.

Keeping it secret

  • Plan it by WhatsApp message, so nothing is said out loud in the hotel room.
  • Book with your own email address and phone number, so messages about the booking come to you.
  • Tell your partner you are going on a sunset boat trip. It is true, and it explains the timing.
  • Agree a signal with the skipper before you board, such as a nod when you are ready. The crew then knows when to give you space, and the photographer knows when to start.
  • If you add hotel pickup, there is no taxi ride to the marina to explain.

On the day, aim to arrive relaxed. Check in at our office with the yellow flag at the entrance to Marina Frapa, 15 minutes before departure. From Pile Gate it is about 10 minutes by taxi (around €12) or city bus number 6, and from the Lapad and Babin Kuk hotels it is a short walk or taxi ride. There is no free parking at the marina, so come by taxi, bus or on foot. Directions are under getting here.

Keeping the ring safe on a moving boat

A small boat moves even when it is waiting, and a ring dropped over the side in open water is gone. A few habits help:

  • Carry the box in a zipped inside pocket or a small zipped bag, never in a loose shorts pocket.
  • Wait until the boat has stopped. On Route B that is the last 10 minutes before sunset, south-west of Lovrijenac. On Route C it is the wait off Grebeni.
  • Do it in the middle of the deck, away from the side of the boat, and keep one hand free to hold on.
  • Open the box over the deck, never over the water.
  • On Route C, leave the box in your bag on board while you swim.

If it’s cloudy or windy

The rules are the same for a proposal as for any other evening:

  • If we cancel for any reason, including unsafe sea or wind, you choose a full refund or a free move to another evening.
  • If a full overcast hides the sunset, you can move to another evening free of charge instead of sailing, subject to availability.
  • If you cancel: 24 hours or more before departure, 100% refund; 12 to 24 hours before departure, 50% refund; less than 12 hours before departure, or no-show, 0% refund. Times count from your scheduled departure, in local Dubrovnik time.

A sky with some cloud can still colour well, so the overcast move is for a sky that is fully covered. Check the forecast the day before: the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service publishes a marine forecast for small craft, with wind and sea state for the Adriatic. The full terms are on the cancellation policy page.

Photos at golden hour

  • Golden hour starts about 40 minutes before sunset. On Route B that is when you are under the walls, so ask for a few photos there even if the question comes later.
  • With the sun behind you, faces go dark against a bright sky. For portraits, the photographer stands towards the sunset and shoots back at you, so the low sun lights your faces and the walls and Lokrum fill the background. On Route B this works best during the wait, when the walls are behind the boat.
  • For silhouettes, do the opposite: shoot towards the sun and set the exposure on the sky.
  • On a phone, tap the sky for a silhouette or tap a face for a portrait, then hold still for a second.
  • From late April to late August the sun drops behind the islands a few minutes early, so start shooting before the official time.
  • Blue hour, from about 10 minutes after sunset, gives a softer second set with the city lights coming on.
  • Stay seated while the boat is moving, and ask the skipper where to stand once it stops.

Plan your proposal evening

If family or friends are waiting to celebrate afterwards, give them the return time: Route A is back at Marina Frapa about 15 minutes after sunset, Route C about 25 minutes after and Route B about 30 minutes after. A dinner table booked for about an hour after sunset leaves time to get there without rushing, and our guide to sunset restaurants and bars lists places near the marina and a short taxi ride away.

Pick two or three possible evenings, check them against the departure timetable, and send us the dates and the route you prefer. If you already know what you want, book the boat on the booking page and add the extras by message afterwards. Either way, tell us it is a proposal, so the skipper knows what the evening is for.

Online booking opens 540 days ahead, so choose your evening early and keep a spare one in case the weather changes.
