In short: For a clear view of the sun going down, head west: Lapad bay and Babin Kuk face the Elaphiti islands, and Panorama on Mount Srđ looks over both. The Buža bars under the Old Town walls see the sun reach the sea only in autumn. Book summer sunset tables ahead; many places close by late October.
Prices for other operators in this guide were checked on 2 October 2026. They change through the season, so check the operator’s own page before you book. Our own prices come from our live price list.
For a clear view of the sun going down, sit on the west side of the city: the terraces of Lapad bay and Babin Kuk look out to the Elaphiti islands, and Panorama on Mount Srđ looks over both. The Buža bars under the Old Town walls face south and south-west and see the sun reach the sea in autumn, and the terraces at Pile look at the fortresses. In summer, book a sunset table ahead.
Which parts of the city face the sunset
The sun sets in the west-north-west in June and July and in the west-south-west by the end of October. That swing of about 50 degrees decides which terraces see it go down, so the direction a place faces matters more than how close it sits to the water.
| Area | Which way you look | At sunset |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town south walls (Buža bars) | South and south-west, to open sea and Lokrum | Sun reaches the sea from about the second week of September; earlier it drops behind Fort Lovrijenac and the Lapad hills |
| Pile and Lovrijenac | South out of a small cove, with Lovrijenac to the west | Sun goes down behind the fort or the coast towards Lapad all season |
| Mount Srđ | West over Lapad bay to the Elaphiti islands, from high above the city | The widest view of the whole sunset |
| Lapad bay and Babin Kuk | West, towards Koločep and the Elaphiti islands | Behind the islands for most of the season, open sea from about mid-September |
| Gruž | West across the harbour to the Lapad shore | Sun goes down behind Lapad |
| Ploče | West to the Old Town, south to Lokrum | Sun goes down behind the city |
We checked each terrace’s outlook against the OpenStreetMap coastline and our sunset bearings across the season. The month-by-month detail is in where the sun sets in Dubrovnik.
Ploče, east of the Old Town, faces the wrong way for the sunset. You look west at the Old Town and south to Lokrum, and the sun goes down behind the city. Its terraces are good for a drink with the walls in view; for the sunset itself, go west.
Old Town and the south walls: the Buža bars
Two cliff bars sit on the rocks outside the south walls. Buža, at Crijevićeva 9, is reached through a small opening in the wall, and Bard, also called Mala Buža, is about 150 metres further east at Ispod Mira 14. Both look out over the open sea, with Lokrum off to the left. The listing we checked describes Buža’s drinks and facilities as basic, warns that summer crowds are common and says opening hours are seasonal, so check on the day and bring some cash as a backup.
The sun sets off to your right. From late April to late August the hills of the Lapad peninsula hide it from right under the walls, about 20 minutes before the official time, and from the Buža rocks the headland of Fort Lovrijenac also stands in the way. From about the second week of September to the end of October the sun sets far enough south to clear Lovrijenac, and you can watch it go down into the open sea. Earlier in the season you still get the colour on the water and in the sky.
Pile and Lovrijenac: dinner with the fortresses
Just outside Pile Gate, Nautika at Brsalje 3 has terraces with what its own site calls a view of the Adriatic and the fortresses of Lovrijenac and Bokar. Below Lovrijenac, Orhan at Od Tabakarije 1 has a terrace by the water in the small bay of Pile, with the walls and the fort in view.
Both look south out of the cove, with Lovrijenac on its rock to the west. The sun goes down behind the fort, or behind the coast towards Lapad, in every month of the season, so you won’t see it touch the water from here. Come for the fortresses and the sea in the evening light. Pile is also the easiest of these areas to combine with an evening in the Old Town, and it is about 10 minutes by taxi from Marina Frapa.
Mount Srđ: a sunset restaurant above the city
Panorama Restaurant & Bar is at the upper cable car station on Mount Srđ, and its own site describes views of the Old City, Lapad bay and the nearby islands. From the terrace you look west over Lapad bay towards Koločep and the other Elaphiti islands, which is the direction the sun sets in, and you are high enough to see over the Lapad hills that hide the summer sunset from the Old Town.
The easiest way up is the cable car. On the timetable we checked on 2 October 2026 it ran until midnight from June to mid-September, and the last car down left well after sunset in every month from April to October. An adult return ticket was listed at €30. The operator stops the cable car when the wind goes above its safety threshold, so on a windy evening check before you go up.
Lapad bay and Babin Kuk: the best sunset bars for the sun itself
This is the side of the city that faces the sunset. You look west, towards Koločep and the other Elaphiti islands, so for most of the season the sun goes down behind the islands. From about mid-September it sets far enough south to reach the open sea. Deep inside the bay, the Babin Kuk shore can hide the midsummer sun before it reaches the islands, so in June and July pick a terrace near the mouth of the bay.
- Sunset Lounge is the bar of the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace at Masarykov put 20, near the mouth of the bay. The hotel’s own page tells you to head through reception just before dusk, and it takes table bookings online. From here the summer sun goes down behind Koločep.
- Levanat, at Šetalište Nika i Meda Pucića 15 on the coastal path along the north side of the bay, is a restaurant with tables by the sea. From late April to mid-August the Babin Kuk shore to its right hides the sun, so it is at its best in April and from late August, when the sun sets out over the bay towards Koločep and, later in September, the open sea.
- Cave Bar More is a bar in a limestone cave under Hotel More, with a seaside terrace overlooking Lapad bay. The hotel gives its season as March to November.
- Sunset Beach is the beach at the head of the bay, with beach bars in season. Despite the name, it has no connection with us. It sits deepest in the bay, so the midsummer sun goes down behind the Babin Kuk side; from late August it sets out through the mouth of the bay.
- Coral Beach Club, at Ivana Zajca 30 on the Babin Kuk side, is a beach club with restaurants and bars. Its own site gives a season from 1 May to early October. It looks west and north-west, so the sun sets behind Koločep or Lopud for most of that season and behind the small island of Daksa in midsummer.
Gruž: harbour views near Marina Frapa
Gruž is the harbour across the water from Lapad, and the walk from Gruž harbour to Marina Frapa takes about 10 minutes along Lapadska obala. From the Gruž waterfront you look west across the harbour at the Lapad shore, and the sun goes down behind it in every month of the season.
Orsan, the yacht club restaurant at Ivana Zajca 2, is on the Lapad side of the harbour, a few minutes’ walk from Marina Frapa, and its terrace looks over the yachts and the harbour traffic. It is the easiest dinner after an evening on the water. Love Bar, on a roof terrace at Andrije Hebranga 95 above the harbour, is higher up. From there you see down the length of Gruž bay towards Daksa, which is where the sun goes in midsummer, and its listing makes a point of the sunset view.
A sunset boat trip, then dinner
If you spend the sunset on the water, you won’t be on a terrace for it, so treat dinner as the second half of the evening. There is a Prosecco toast for adults on every tour but no food, so plan dinner for after you are back. Our boats return to Marina Frapa 15 to 30 minutes after sunset: about 15 minutes on Route A, 25 on Route C and 30 on Route B.
Book your table for about an hour after sunset. On 1 July, for example, the sun sets at 20:29, Route B is back at about 21:00, and a table at 21:30 leaves time to get there without rushing. In mid-October the sun sets around 18:00, so a table at about 19:00 works the same way.
Orsan is a few minutes’ walk from the marina. Levanat, Cave Bar More and the Sunset Lounge are a short taxi ride away in Lapad. Pile is about 10 minutes by taxi, around €12, and city bus number 6 also runs between Pile Gate and the marina area. Tonight’s sunset and boarding times are under tonight, and the marina directions are under getting here.
Booking a sunset table, and the end of the season
In July and August, book sunset tables ahead and ask for one facing the sea when you do. Most of the restaurants above take bookings through their own sites: Nautika, Panorama, Orhan, Levanat and the Sunset Lounge all have a booking form or link.
Many places here are seasonal. Coral Beach Club’s season ends in early October, Cave Bar More runs from March to November, Panorama keeps seasonal hours and the cable car is closed in winter. Many terraces close around the end of October, the same week our own season ends, so late in the month check the venue’s own site before you set off. Hours change through the season, and Buža’s listing says to check them on the day.
Plan the evening
Check tonight’s sunset first, then choose: a terrace facing west, or the sunset on the water and dinner afterwards. Our tours include shared and private boats from Marina Frapa. If you would rather stay on land, our guide to the best places to watch the sunset covers spots on land and at sea, and for a special evening there is our guide to planning a sunset proposal.
Our season ends on 31 October and many terraces close around then, so plan autumn evenings early.
