In short: Choose a sunset kayak if you are reasonably fit, can swim and want a 2–3 hour paddle from Pile under the city walls, with a swim at Betina cave, on a calm evening. Choose a sunset boat tour for young children, older travellers, more coastline and a midsummer sunset seen from open water, with no paddling.
Prices for other operators in this guide were checked on 2 October 2026. They change through the season, so check the operator’s own page before you book. Our own prices come from our live price list.
Choose the kayak if you are reasonably fit, happy to get wet and want a 2–3 hour paddle from Pile under the city walls, with a swim at Betina cave. Choose the boat if you have young children, would rather not paddle, or want more coastline and an open-water view of the sun going down. Both need a reasonably calm evening, and you feel the wind far more in a kayak.
What a sunset kayak tour in Dubrovnik involves
We read three operators’ own pages on 2 October 2026: Adventure Dalmatia, Dubrovnik Old Town Kayaking and Dubrovnik Walks. Their sunset tours follow the same basic pattern.
- Start: Pile Bay, the small cove below the Pile Gate, near the western entrance to the Old Town. Each operator has its own stand or coloured umbrella. Old Town Kayaking meets at Brsalje 3, in front of Restaurant Nautika.
- Route: along the foot of the city walls to Betina cave, a small beach inside a cave that you can only reach from the sea, for a swim and some snorkelling. Old Town Kayaking also paddles around Lokrum, and Dubrovnik Walks passes near it.
- Time and distance: 2 hours and 4–5 km with Adventure Dalmatia; 2 hours and 4 km, or 3 hours and 7 km, with Dubrovnik Walks; 3 hours and 7.5 km with Old Town Kayaking. You arrive 10–30 minutes early for the briefing, depending on the operator.
- Start time: Adventure Dalmatia and Old Town Kayaking set it by the sunset, so it moves through the season.
- Price: listed at €45 by Adventure Dalmatia, and at €40 for 2 hours or €45 for 3 hours by Dubrovnik Walks, on 2 October 2026. Old Town Kayaking shows its price in its booking calendar.
- Included: kayak, paddle, life jacket, snorkelling gear, a waterproof barrel or bag for your things, and wine at the end, which Old Town Kayaking and Dubrovnik Walks serve to over-18s only. Adventure Dalmatia and Dubrovnik Walks add a bottle of water, and Old Town Kayaking adds snacks. Adventure Dalmatia uses double sit-on-top kayaks.
- Who can go: no experience is needed. Minimum ages are 4 at Adventure Dalmatia, 6 at Old Town Kayaking and 8 at Dubrovnik Walks. Old Town Kayaking and Dubrovnik Walks both ask guests to understand English.
What a sunset boat tour from Gruž involves
Our sunset tours leave from Marina Frapa in Gruž, about 10 minutes by taxi (around €12) or the number 6 city bus from Pile. You check in at our office with the yellow flag at the marina entrance, 15 minutes before departure. Departure times are worked out from each evening’s sunset. Shared tours run on the Ayros 22, which takes 12 guests at most, and every tour includes a licensed skipper, fuel, a prosecco toast for adults and life jackets.
- Golden Hour Express (Route A): about 1 hour 10 minutes and 6.1 nautical miles, roughly 11 km. Out past Daksa island, round Babin Kuk to the Grebeni lighthouse rocks, an optional swim of about 10 minutes when the sea is calm, then the sunset from the open channel with the Elaphiti islands on the horizon. Shared: €25 adults, €15 children aged 4–11.
- Sunset & City Walls (Route B): about 1 hour 50 minutes and 12.6 nautical miles, roughly 23 km. The Grebeni lighthouse, the Petka cliffs of Lapad, Fort Lovrijenac and the Old Town walls as golden hour starts, past the west side of Lokrum, then the sunset from open water with the walls behind the boat. There is no swim stop. Shared: €35 adults from June to September and €30 in April, May and October, €20 children aged 4–11.
- Koločep Swim & Sunset (Route C): private only, about 2 hours 20 minutes. A swim of about 40 minutes in a sheltered cove on Koločep’s east side, a slow golden-hour cruise along the Koločep channel, then the sunset off Grebeni. €320 per boat for up to six guests, €550 for up to 12.

Effort, age and getting wet
A sunset kayak is exercise. Adventure Dalmatia asks for “a low level of fitness”. Dubrovnik Walks asks for reasonable fitness and says its tour involves several kilometres of paddling and is not for everyone. If you can’t finish, Old Town Kayaking arranges private transport back and charges you for it. The paddle home is the hard part if there is a breeze in your face, and harder still after a day on your feet in the city.
On the boat the skipper does the work. You sit, watch the coast go by and step off at Marina Frapa about 15 to 30 minutes after sunset, depending on the route.
Children are where the two differ most. Kayak operators set minimum ages of 4, 6 or 8, and Old Town Kayaking puts children in a double kayak with an adult. Our shared tours welcome children: ages 4–11 pay the child price, €15 on Route A and €20 on Route B, and under-4s ride free, though they count toward the boat’s 12 places. Nobody has to paddle, and life jackets are on board.
On getting wet, Old Town Kayaking is direct: “Expect to get wet.” Its kit list is a swimsuit, towel, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and flip-flops or water shoes, and Dubrovnik Walks asks for much the same. On the boat you stay in your clothes unless you choose to swim, and Route B has no swim stop at all. Towels are not provided on our tours, so bring your own for a swim on Route A or C. Our guide to what to wear on a sunset boat trip covers layers month by month.
Where you are when the sun goes down
The view at the moment of sunset changes with the season, and it depends on where you sit.
Kayak groups watch the sunset close to the walls, near Lokrum or on the paddle back to Pile. Adventure Dalmatia describes a sunset towards the Elaphiti islands on the way back. Old Town Kayaking stops near Lokrum to watch the sun set behind the city. From right under the walls, between about 21 April and 22 August, the hills of the Lapad peninsula hide the sun roughly 20 minutes before the official sunset. You still get the colour in the sky and the last light on the stone. Outside those dates the sun sets over open sea, and you can watch it all the way down from under the walls.
The boat routes are timed to be in open water at sunset. Route A watches from the open channel with the Elaphiti islands on the horizon. Route C waits off the Grebeni lighthouse. Route B waits about 1.5 km south-west of Fort Lovrijenac, with the walls and Lokrum behind the boat catching the last light. From late April to late August the sun sinks behind Koločep and the Elaphiti islands a few minutes before the official time, and in spring and autumn it sets over open sea. Our guide to where the sun sets in Dubrovnik explains the angles month by month.
Photos differ too. In a kayak you sit at water level with the walls rising straight above you, and you need both hands for the paddle, so bring a waterproof pouch if you want pictures on the move. On the boat your hands are free at every stop, and Route B passes the walls just as golden hour starts.
Wind, waves and rough evenings
Wind shapes both trips, and you feel it most when you are the engine. Three local winds matter here.
- Maestral: the summer north-westerly, usually 5–8 m/s. According to the Croatian Encyclopedia, it starts between 08:00 and 09:00, peaks around 14:00 and drops away around 18:00, or by sunset at the latest. On settled summer days that leaves less wind for a sunset paddle than for an afternoon one.
- Jugo: a south-easterly that builds gradually, blows steadily at 6–11 m/s and raises big waves on open water (Croatian Encyclopedia). It is more frequent in the cooler half of the year.
- Bura: a strong, dry, cold north-easterly that comes off the land in gusts and can arrive suddenly. It blows mostly in the cold season and is stronger at night (Croatian Encyclopedia, DHMZ).
All three kayak operators say they can cancel or change the route in bad weather. Old Town Kayaking then offers another date or a full refund. Dubrovnik Walks offers another date, a walking tour instead, or a full refund.
Our boats have weather limits too. If we cancel for any reason, including unsafe sea or wind, you choose a full refund or a free move to another evening. If full cloud hides the sunset, you can move to another evening free of charge instead of sailing, subject to availability. The details are in our cancellation policy. If you want to check the wind yourself, Croatia’s meteorological service, DHMZ, publishes a marine forecast for small craft in English.
When the kayak is the better fit
- You are active adults, a couple or friends, and you want the evening to include some exercise.
- You want a swim and some snorkelling at Betina cave, which you can only reach from the sea.
- You are staying in or near the Old Town and would like to walk to the start.
- The forecast is calm and settled, typically a summer evening after the maestral has dropped.
- You are here from late August into October, when the sun sets over open sea in full view from under the walls.
- Your children meet the operator’s minimum age and swim confidently.
When the boat is the better fit
- You are travelling with young children. Under-4s ride free on our shared tours, children aged 4–11 pay €15 or €20, and nobody paddles.
- You want an easy evening with no physical effort. That suits older travellers and anyone who has spent the day walking the city walls.
- You want to see more coastline. Route B covers about 23 km, from Daksa and the Grebeni lighthouse past the Lapad cliffs, Lovrijenac and the walls to Lokrum.
- You want a midsummer sunset seen across open water. From late April to late August the boat waits in open water, where the sun sinks behind Koločep and the Elaphiti islands.
- You want a short evening. Route A is back at Marina Frapa about 15 minutes after sunset.
- You want to stay dry and go straight on to dinner.
Doing both, and what to book next
You can also do both. Old Town Kayaking and Dubrovnik Walks run morning or daytime paddles as well, which leaves the sunset free for the boat. Compare routes, times and prices in our tours section and on the price table, see how to reach Marina Frapa, and check the FAQ for anything else.
A shared boat takes 12 guests at most, and online booking closes the day before departure.
